Atheists Celebrate Supreme Court Ruling Affirming Marriage Equality

Organization Focuses Next on Battle Over ‘Religious Refusal’ Laws

Cranford, NJ—American Atheists today applauded the United States Supreme Court in its 5-4 decision guaranteeing the rights of same-sex couples to marry nationwide and joined LGBT Americans in celebrating equality under the law.

“This is a victory too long in the making,” said American Atheists President David Silverman. “The Court recognized what we have been saying for years—that bigotry cloaked in religious belief has no place in our laws. This is a day to celebrate with our LGBT friends, family, and loved ones.”

“The Court’s decision today is just the first step in ensuring equality for all Americans,” said National Legal and Public Policy Director Amanda Knief. “States throughout the nation continue to use ‘religious freedom’ laws as an excuse to discriminate against LGBT people and religious minorities. That is the next fight. And it is one that we have to win.”

AMERICAN ATHEISTS is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that defends civil rights for atheists, freethinkers, and other nonbelievers; works for the total separation of religion and government; and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy. American Atheists was founded in 1963 by Madalyn Murray O’Hair.

  • Andrew Hammond

Finally, now it’s on to fighting the bigotry of religion. Reason will win out.

    • [email protected]

I don’t think anyone can reasonably hold to Atheism Andrew.

      • Cthulhu21

        What does that mean?

        • Stanley B. Manley

What she means is that if you’re an atheist then you’re not being “reasonable”, or some such bullschitt.

          • Cthulhu21

I was trying to see what she would say, but I can see that’s not gona happen.

    • Jonathan Blake

Marriage is a sacred religious ceremony. Sounds like you guys want in. Yea you know that’s it.

      • Sean Nolan

No it isn’t. Marriage is about two people, who love each other, declaring to themselves, and to the world, that they are partners for life. It has nothing to do with religion.

        • Jonathan Blake

See why we get pissed off. you change what is sacred to parallel your perverted lifestyle. marriage is between a man and a woman. If you can’t except that don’ participate. Oh look another atheist that makes seven?

          • Sean Nolan

And you change the concept of marriage to parallel your beliefs and try to force those beliefs onto other people. By the way, there are far more than seven atheists in this world and the number is climbing.

          • Stanley B. Manley

Yeah, I’d guess there are about 700 million atheists on the planet and the number is climbing rapidly.

          • Stanley B. Manley

Jonathan, there are PLENTY of religious websites where your view are wanted. Bugger off!

        • Mo Fo

Why 2 people you bigot. Why can’t 4 people love each other and all marry??
          Bigot…
          Bigot…

          • Sean Nolan

Fine more than two people if you like. How dare you call me a bigot. I am no such thing.

          • Stanley B. Manley

Got nothing better to do, troll?

    • Jonathan Blake

Give us your best shot dykes.

      • Sean Nolan

That is very un-christian of you.

        • Jonathan Blake

No I defend the name of Christ always.

          • Sean Nolan

Christ tells you to love one another. You are just spreading hate.

          • Stanley B. Manley

            You are just spreading idiocy.

          • Sean Nolan

            Me? How?

          • Stanley B. Manley

            Go defend it somewhere else.

  • fjpor

As ot should be – too long in coming but at least it finally happened. Scalia’s dissent was just what one would expect from him while Roberts was a bit more measured

  • John McCready

LGBT advocates could have had this “equality” a LONG TIME AGO, if they had simply called for the repeal of “straight-marriage recognition” laws! This fight should NEVER have had to get to this level, or go this long. Congrats. to the winning side in any case!

  • Scott Hamilton

Why do atheists care….lol…..they believe in nothing…..saddest group of people on the planet

  • Vladut Tepes

I am an atheist and againt gay marriage 🙂

    • Jake Mono

      Good for fucking you 🙂

    • That’s one I’ve never heard before.

      • Stanley B. Manley

And I suspect hell will freeze over before you see it again!!

    • Dana Logsdon

How does one be “againt” something?

      • Mo Fo

Same as atheists being bigoted against anyone who believes in Religion

      • Stanley B. Manley

        Are you the spelling police?

    • arydant

Being atheist doesn’t define your values in life, it just means you don’t believe in a deity. If anyone thinks they are righteous in shaming others for their convictions by virtue of being atheist you are an asshole. However, it is important to understand that the same politics that subjugates atheists is also the one that condemns gays as well.

  • I see this as good news.

  • R.Myr

Forcing others to bow to atheism by denying the right to refuse specific actions on religious grounds is fascism pure and simple, hate religion, don’t believe it. Fine. But don’t take away the rights of those who want to practice their religion.

    • Stanley B. Manley

Your reasoning is turned inside out.

  • Stanley B. Manley

I was kinda think’n that if we lost that one my state might pass a law saying being single is illegal!
